The Legacy of JSS Law College in Legal Education
JSS Law College, established in 1982 as part of JSS
Mahavidyapeetha, has a rich history of pioneering legal education in India.
Initially offering a three-year law program affiliated with the University of
Mysore, the college expanded its offerings in 1984 to include the five-year
integrated BAL LL.B program, a rarity at the time in Indian universities. This
innovative approach to legal education was embraced by the University of
Mysore, which granted the college permanent affiliation in 1995.
In 1998, the college achieved a significant milestone by
being included under Sections 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act, a recognition of
its commitment to providing quality education. The UGC granted autonomy to JSS
Law College in 2005, making it the first law college in Karnataka to achieve
this status. Currently, the college operates autonomously under the Karnataka
State Law University, Hubli.
The college's commitment to excellence is evident in its
diverse student body, which includes students from 14 countries and various
regions of India. Recognized by the UGC as a "College with Potential for
Excellence" and re-accredited with an 'A' grade by NAAC, JSS Law College
is consistently ranked among the top law colleges in India. A testament to its
reputation, the college was recognized as one of the best 20 law colleges in
the country in a survey conducted by Career 360 Magazine in 2017-18.
JSS Law College's vision is to create a community of
committed legal professionals who are not only competent in solving legal and
social problems but also compassionate members of society. Its mission is to
provide a scholarly environment where students can excel academically and
develop into outstanding legal professionals and leaders who serve the
profession and society. The college is committed to promoting access and
excellence through flexible and innovative programs that cater to a diverse
student population.
JSS Law College has been at the forefront of organizing
Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, not only within its institution but
also in the city of Mysore. One of its notable achievements is conducting the
first-ever Model UN in Mysore, setting a precedent for other colleges and
universities in the region. Through these MUN conferences, JSS Law College has
been able to educate and engage students from various institutions, including
the University of Mysore, on important global issues.
The MUN conferences organized by JSS Law College provide a
platform for students to enhance their understanding of international affairs,
diplomacy, and negotiation. By simulating the workings of the United Nations,
students develop critical skills such as research, public speaking, and
problem-solving. These conferences also promote cross-cultural understanding
and cooperation among students from diverse backgrounds. Moreover, by educating
students from other colleges and universities in Mysore, JSS Law College has
contributed to the growth of the Model UN movement in the region. This
initiative not only enriches the educational experience of students but also
fosters a sense of responsibility towards addressing global challenges and
promoting peace and cooperation.
